| Ambrose, Marius F. |
|
Former resident of New Stockholm, Wisconsin who disappeared mysteriously in the mid-1930s [The Mansion in the Mist, 105]. A painting of Ambrose shows him to be a tall, gloomy-looking man with a long and ridged nose and red-rimmed eyes below arched black eyebrows [106]. Anthony and Miss Eells verify from the painting that Ambrose is in fact the Grand Autarch. In addition, Ambrose's Wisconsin mansion is identical to the mansion seen in the Autarch dimension.
As the Grand Autarch, leader of the Autarch cult, Ambrose is described as a gaunt old man with arched black eyebrows, and a long main of white hair that hung at his shoulders. He wore half-moon glasses on his long ridged nose and there was a jeweled star that shone on his black velvet robe. He later comes disguised as an old fisherman to Eells' summer cottage.
Bishop Marius Ambrosius Capello (1597-1676) was bishop of the Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekathedraal, or Cathedral of Our Lady, in Antwerp, Belgium. The bishop was highly regarded and beloved by the poor people of Antwerp, to whom he left all of his possessions. Out of thankfulness for this act, the almoners of the city had a large commemorative monument made for him shortly after his death. It still hangs in the nave of the Cathedral towards the front, against one of the supporting walls of the south tower. Artist Artus Quellinus the Younger (1625-1700) created the tomb.
