| Bugloss, Cardinal Orcus |
Cardinal that gives permission for the Short Guide to Catholic Church History; is the Bishop of Ravenna, Georgia [St. Fidgeta & Other Parodies, 51].
Bowen says that he believes that orcus means demon and that Tolkien changed the goblins of The Hobbit to orcs in The Lord of the Rings because he needed something more sinister and less associated with children's stories.
"My Latin dictionary is Classical only, and defines orcus as a name for the infernal regions and also for the god who rules them. I did find, via the OED, that orco means demon in Italian, and comes from the Latin proper noun. So I think there's some reason to believe that orcus meant demon in medieval Latin.
Bugloss is a type flowering plant and John probably liked the sound of it. I must admit that I do, too. Orcus Cardinal Bugloss has a real ring to it."
