D., Mrs. L.S.
Asks the Question Box moderator what she gets if she makes five First Fridays [devotions] and what, "if anything is in the last Fatima letter?" [St. Fidgeta & Other Parodies, 40].
Thinking there is an acid trip story behind this? Guess again. Bowen notes that Bellairs, anglophile that he was, probably was alluding to the British slang for money. "LSD comes from the old monetary system, in use until 1972, of pounds, shillings, and pence, which were represented by Latin initials where L stood for pounds (librae), S for shillings (solidi - the solidus was a Roman coin) and D for pence (denarii - likewise the denarius). This had started in the Middle Ages and continued right down to 1972; I used to get bills from English and Irish booksellers for sums like £7,10s,6d."

As for the drug, Myers says he never had an LSD experience and neither did John. "In my humble opinion, all that hallucinogens do is screw up the electrical connections of the neurons in your brain."
