| Garagiola, Sandro di |
Painter of numerous frescos involving Pope Sporus VI [St. Fidgeta & Other Parodies, 57], including:
- Pope Sporus Debating with Aristotle
- Pope Sporus Duelling with the Spirits of Nestorius and John Hus
- Pope Sporus Being Begged by the Curia Not to Abdicate and Go To Live on Patmos as a Hermit
Joe Garagiola was the first famous former player to serve as color man for network baseball broadcasts and Bowen believes his second career as a color man began in the 60s, so he is probably the source of this name - "if he isn't, I can't imagine who could be." Garagiola was a catcher for the St. Louis Cardinals in the 1940s; "his expert commentary was fascinating," Bowen adds, "although you could get the impression that most of the tactics and strategy in a baseball game revolved around the catcher."
Says Myers, "Even in the early '60s he was famous for being Yogi Berra's best friend." |
