| Godwin I, King |
The first King of All the South; also known as Longbeard [The Face in the Frost, vii]. Godwin was the last ruler of the Southern Kingdom to have any real authority over the kingdom. After inheriting the kingdom, Godwin divided the land among his sons, who in turn did likewise, resulting in the Kingdom's jumbled mess of duchies and principalities, as seen on maps of Prospero's time. It is assumed Godwin ruled from Roundcourt. One of Godwin's accomplishments was the construction of the Great South Road, a stone highway that ran throughout the kingdom [47-8].
There is a historical allusion in the name, that of the Anglo-Saxon Godwin, Earl of Wessex (1001-1053).
