| Pike, Bishop James |
Hamish Runcet makes a prediction that Governor John Wayne will sentence this bishop to death in 1980 [St. Fidgeta and Other Parodies, 104].
Lawyer-turned-priest (1913-69) who criticized McCarthyism and became an outspoken advocate of civil rights and planned parenthood. In 1958 he was appointed bishop of California, serving until 1966 when he joined the Center for Democratic Institutions. Two years later he renounced the church to form the Foundation for Religious Transition. He died while on an expedition in the Judean desert.
Of all of Runcet’s predictions, this is one that didn’t come true (that is, the one we can assume didn’t come true): Pike died in 1969 and was nowhere near California in 1980.
