The Shuffly (shuf-flE) (or Scuffulans Hirsutus, roughly translated as the hairy shuffling one) becomes Snodrog's nemesis, and eventual undoing, when the two meet face to face. What is a Shuffly? Sir Bertram says, "They live in fens and eat Mayflies, bulrush hearts, and linen napkins." This particular one wears brown bathroom slippers and has a penchant for wanting to play [The Pedant and the Shuffly].
Dale Fitschen explains the Shuffly is a sort of light-hearted offspring of The Heap, a semi-popular comic book creature that first appeared in 1942. The Heap's story started when the wealthy and popular Baron von Emmelmann was shot down over Poland during WWI and left to sink lifelessly in a swamp. Twenty years passed as the body fermented in the rotting vegetation, metamorphosing into a half-man, half-pile of perambulating lianas that had great strength, supposed control over vegan things, and a heart of gold.
