Murphy is a professor of American Literature, specializing in late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century literature. He has been a member of the board of governors of the Willa Cather Pioneer Memorial and Education Foundation for the last eleven years and has edited the Cather Newsletter (a quarterly journal with 1700 subscribers) for the last six years. He is co-editor of Literature and Belief and serves on the editorial boards of Western American Literature and University of Nebraska Press's scholarly edition of Cather. He has published dozens of articles in books and in such leading journals as American Literature, Twentieth-Century Literature, Thought, Religion and Literature.
