The city of Cristobal, Michigan
What conjuration and what mighty magic
Cristobal, Michigan is a small farm village about 20 miles southwest of New Zebedee. It’s described simply as a "crossroads with a feed store, a general store, and a gas station" [43, 90-1]. Belle Frisson and a handful of other magicians are buried in a cemetery outside of town. Cristobal is a fictitious community created by Strickland to mirror the “Magic Capital of the World,” Colon, Michigan. In a book of magic museums and malicious magicians, one wonders if the village’s name is a play on words of "crystal ball”? Actually, it’s an allusion to the Spanish name of navigator Christopher Columbus, Cristóbal Colón. |
