| Via Pulcinella |
Fictional road in Rome; the list of Marian Titles extends from the altar of St. Peter's to the house of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Sims, located here at number 38 [St. Fidgeta & Other Parodies, 93].
Pulcinella is another name of the classic comedy figure, Punch. It is also a ballet by Igor Stravinsky based on tunes supposedly written by Giovanni Pergolesi, a prominent Italian composer of the 18th century.
Myers notes subsequent research has shown that many composers of that era actually wrote the source tunes. "Stravinsky made them his own, cloaking them in acerbic modern harmonies, orchestrations and rhythms. the resultant score is a delight and would please even those not ordinarily interested in classical music - unless they were really hopeless! It is one of the first scores of the so-called neo-classical movement in modern music."
Whoever the Sims are is irrelevant - maybe an in-joke reference to someone Bellairs knew in Chicago, maybe not. Don't worry about it. |
